124 arrested in Malaysian language protest

Source: AsiaOne

Riot police fired tear gas into several hundreds of people marching to Istana Negara to protest the use of English in the teaching of Mathematics and Science at 2.40pm Saturday.

But by 3.20pm, the police and Federal Reserve Unit were successful in dispersing the crowd.

Police detained 124 people for questioning. Among those spotted in the crowd were Pas President Datuk Seri Hadi Awang and Mohd Sabu.

About 200 people ran away to the mosque, regrouped there but dispersed after evening prayers.

The march and the subsequent rain has caused massive traffic jams in the city.

The crowd had gathered at Masjid Negara earlier and started to march to the Palace and were close to the Tun Sambanthan building when riot police began shooting tear gas.

Many in the crowd ran away as the scene filled with smoke. The Federal Reserve unit trucks were initially stuck in traffic but caught up with the crowd and also started firing tear gas.

The crowd had planned to submit a memorandum to the King, appealing for the return of the use of Bahasa Malaysia in the teaching of the two subjects.

This is as asinine and ignorant as a news story can get. We are fortunate to live in a place (Canada) where different languages are encouraged in our education system. Countries such as China, Japan and Korea are bending over backwards to find qualified English teachers. Soon there will be full English Universities in these places similar to the ones in Hong Kong.

Yes a place like Malaysia want nothing to do with this. Young students taking to the streets to protest learning in English is one of the saddest and most brainwashed things I've ever seen. Many many countries would jump at the opportunity to have the option of taking classes in English to advance on the world stage. Why are other Asian countries rising in the world while Malaysia stays dumb as a doorknob? This is why.

Hi Degenerasian :D

There are good malaysians
Like Dr Jemilah Mahmood
But they're rarely in the media
Negative news eclipse the positive ones

I work with people who probably never go to uni, & they are not dumb. Once the radio had a disturbance, a girl jokes "what's wrong with this radio... aaahh i forgot, an electrical pole just walked by ha ha ha" it was the sexy girl walking by. "She goes "Of course, I had lotsa voltage , attractive!" The thing is they know the human body has electrics.

My aunt, she also doesn't have much paper qualification. But she learns a lot from her surroundings.

Anyway. During my school days I learn maths & science in my national language. English is a separate subject. I scored all As in all of them. There are issues. But to say Malaysians are dumb may not be sharp.

Maybe I am just a stupid Malaysian.
But I can always learn!
I personally think I learn English from TV better than school.
