U.S. Births Hint at Bias for Boys in Some Asians

The trend is buried deep in United States census data: seemingly minute deviations in the proportion of boys and girls born to Americans of Chinese, Indian and Korean descent.

In those families, if the first child was a girl, it was more likely that a second child would be a boy, according to recent studies of census data. If the first two children were girls, it was even more likely that a third child would be male.

Demographers say the statistical deviation among Asian-American families is significant, and they believe it reflects not only a preference for male children, but a growing tendency for these families to embrace sex-selection techniques, like in vitro fertilization and sperm sorting, or abortion.

New immigrants typically transplant some of their customs and culture to the United States — from tastes in food and child-rearing practices to their emphasis on education and the elevated social and economic status of males. The appeal to immigrants by clinics specializing in sex selection caused some controversy a decade ago.

But a number of experts expressed surprise to see evidence that the preference for sons among Asian-Americans has been so significantly carried over to this country. “That this is going on in the United States — people were blown away by this,” said Prof. Lena Edlund of Columbia University.

I don't know if it was in jest or not but Rain now knows that his dream girl knows who he is. A hookup would definitely accelerate his Hollywood career. Maybe she found out about him on her recent trip to Korea. She states that she's seen Rain with his shirt off and that it was very impressive.

Indian dad avoids washing for 35 years

An Indian man who fathered seven daughters has not washed for 35 years in an apparent attempt to ensure his next child is a boy, newspapers reported.

Kailash "Kalau" Singh replaces bathing and brushing his teeth with a "fire bath" every evening when he stands on one leg beside a bonfire, smokes marijuana and says prayers to Lord Shiva, according to the Hindustan Times.

"It's just like using water to take a bath," Kalau was reported as saying. "A fire bath helps kill germs and infection in the body."

Kalau, 63, from a village outside the holy city of Varanasi, outraged his family by refusing to take a ritual dip in the river Ganges even after his brother died five years ago.

"I still don't remember how it all began," he said in Saturday's edition of the paper. "I just know it started about 35 years ago."

Kalau's hygiene regime has taken its toll on his professional life.

That's just GROSS!

However the story does bring up this issue. Why is it that all the Indian families I know have more daughters than sons and all the Chinese families I know have more daughters than sons. I know a Lebanese family with 8 daughters.

What causes this? Is is genetics? Is it superstition? I know Chinese women eat certain foods or pray alot when they plan to be pregnant and hope to have a boy? Does it work?

Me? I want a baby girl. So I can dress her up and play with her hair. I can't do much with a boy :)

The Agenda: Ethnic Politics

A good discussion on The Agenda about ethnic politics with the current issues going on.



They addressed many issues but one they sort of missed was block voting in the nomination process. I think in the general election, whether federal of provincial, there are too many voters and block voting wouldn't really work. For example all the Chinese wouldn't be able to get a Chinese candidate of the green party to win a seat in Alberta.

But at the nomination votes for each party, the numbers are very small and a community could get a person nominated. I know of one situation a few years ago where an person won a PC nomination in Alberta with 200 votes. 200! I think most people here could gather up over 200 friends and beat this guy. Bring a PC candidate in Calgary is nearly a slam dunk.

I always get a bit uncomfortable when I read stories that so and so has become the first ______ politician and it's cause for celebration. Often people block vote for someone and get nothing out of it because they go on to bigger and better things and ingore YOU.

Amazing Race: Tammy and Victor Win, Asian Nerds Rule!

Wow, absolutely amazing. Congrats to Tammy and Victor Jih on winning the Amazing Race. The both of them really shined through and worked well as a team. In a way, it was good that they went through that meltdown in Romania early on in the race. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and they took that lesson and learned from it. Their bond as brother and sister became stronger, and their teamwork was unstoppable as a result. I was really impressed at how Tammy just kept pulling that pig, and Victor used just the right amount of "push" to get his sister going but not break her spirit.

Loved it! For a newcomer to come to American and pick up comedy is wonderful. Immigrants make hilarious comedians because that's what comedy is about, funny observations. Immigrants run into strange situations and they're funny stories to tell.

This type of comedy reminds me of old Yakov Smirnoff skits.

Maple syrup has a complexity that sugar lacks. It is imbued with a more subtle sweetness, with a hint of smoke and caramel – echoes, perhaps, of the sugar maple grove from which it dripped and the long, slow boil over a wood fire that transformed it into this most quintessential trademark of Quebec.

Used in moderation, maple marries well with a panoply of other flavours. Its sweet flavour is a great foil in salty dishes. And it rounds out the edges of spicy dishes. Maple also tames the sour twang of lemon, lime or vinegar in a recipe.

But don’t take my word for it. Take your cue from a host of Montreal chefs who are maple maniacs. Au Pied de Cochon chef Martin Picard poaches eggs in it, then adds it to a duck and maple sauce that he slathers over foie gras. Laurent Godbout’s new bistro La Fabrique does pea soup with maple cream on the side. And – who knew? – there's maple syrup all over the place in the dishes at the trendy St. Laurent Blvd. Asian restaurant Soy.

Soy’s chef-owner Suzanne Liu says one of her restaurant’s most asked-for dishes is shrimp sauté with Thai herbs and maple syrup. It features seared shrimp in a sauce of maple syrup, coconut milk, Thai fish sauce, hot sauce and garlic, served on a bed of bean sprouts.

Liu also loves using maple syrup in a glaze for duck breast. She’ll sear thick slices of duck glazed with maple syrup, then braise the duck and its juices to allow the maple flavour to better penetrate the meat.

“Maple lends a smoother flavour than other sweeteners. It isn’t harsh like sugar,” she says. “It gives the dish a smooth feel, and it doesn’t add a bad aftertaste like sugar or honey can.”

Her customers are sometimes surprised to see maple syrup on an Asian menu. What’s that taste, they ask.

Hmmmm not sure about this. For example when you have dimsum you'd dip the shrimp and dumpling into soy sauce. Could we dip it into maple syrup? I think it's too sweet!

Bringing Together Thai, Indian and Chinese

IT’S hard to categorize the New Chilli and Curry Restaurant in Hicksville. The owner and the chefs are from Nepal. The food is Thai, Indian-style Chinese and North Indian. The menu explains that generations ago, immigrants from China settled in Calcutta and Bombay, and, over time, these Hakka Chinese began to cook their native food incorporating Indian spices and other Indian ingredients.

The restaurant, which opened last May, occupies a converted cottage, which is cozy and charming. The walls are brick and the ceiling pressed tin with a shiny copper finish. The décor is dominated by Buddha statues, a large photograph of the Dalai Lama and numerous depictions of elephants.

On a recent Sunday night, when every table was occupied and diners were lined up at the door, the restaurant staff was harried and overwhelmed; our waiter talked so fast we couldn’t understand a word he said. The kitchen fell behind and there were long waits between courses. On a laid-back Wednesday, the same waiter was helpful and accommodating, and the meal was properly paced.

He got us on the right track when we were ordering appetizers, steering us to the fried shrimp with garlic and fresh chili. The delicious shrimp had been coated in coconut powder and tossed with garlic and chilies. Don’t worry about the food being too spicy for your palate; even though this dish was designated with a chili pepper on the menu, the kitchen toned it down as we requested.

Another headliner from the appetizer list was crispy chicken with honey and dried chili. The chunks of boneless meat were crunchy and reminiscent of General Tso’s chicken. Crunchy was also the word for the Thai spring roll, cut into six pieces and served with plum sauce. The fish pakora, strips of fish marinated in Indian spices and deep fried, passed muster, but paneer tikka — slices of bland house-made cheese, seasoned and barbecued in the tandoor oven — elicited reactions of “interesting” rather than “wow.”

Police, federal agents raid Warwick spa

The police and federal authorities have not ruled out possible human trafficking at a spa advertised as the Asian Fantasy Escort Service at 1550 B Post Rd. Police Maj. Joseph H. Tavares said U.S. immigration agents and Warwick detectives are continuing a joint investigation after seizing records and other evidence at that address Thursday.

Three Korean women, one of whom had an outstanding deportation order, were questioned at the scene, but no one was arrested, Tavares said. One woman gave a New Jersey address, another gave a Fall River address. Tavares said all three women are adults, but did not provide their ages.

A kitchen, cooking equipment, mattresses and personal items found in ground-floor rooms “were signs that they were sleeping there,” and may have been there “for some period of time,” Tavares said. While that could point to trafficking, “there would have to be further evidence” that the women were being kept against their will. “We’re looking into that possibility, but we don’t have that evidence at this time,” Tavares said.

Tavares said the upstairs area included “a waiting room and two working rooms, with massage tables, and a complete bathroom.”

No really? It wasn't really a SPA? I wonder what the beds were really for!?

The Masters - Final Round

$360,000 in my pocket! I beat Phil and Tiger!

A crazy day at The Masters. It started with Phil Mickleson and Tiger Woods in the same pairing, both 7 shots back of the leader. Then they both made a charge and at point Phil was only one shot back and Tiger two. But they both limped down the stretch. That was the main show as the partons (why are they called partons in golf and no spectators?) followed them around, ignoring everyone else. Everyone else sucked as if they were watching Phil and Tiger too. But when they were done, everyone seemed to get their game back. Turned into a 3-horse race between Kenny Perry, Chad Campbell and Angel Cabrera. The Japanese pimp made a late run to finish -10 and alone in 4th place pocketing $360,000, not bad!

Katayama's fourth equals best finish for Japan at Masters

The other Asians remaining Anthony Kim and Ryuji Imada finished in a 10-way tie for 19th at -2. I think they both pocket around $76,000. Remember Imada had to make a difficult putt on the last hole Friday evening just to make the cut or else he'd have gone home penniless. Amazing he got up to 19th!

Kenny Perry had a 2 shot lead with 2 holes left but blew it. Cabrera looked to be stuck behind a tree on the first playoff hole but neither Perry or Campbell could capitalize, Campbell actually missed a 4 foot putt and got eliminated. On the 2nd playoff hole Perry shanked it left and pretty much handed the Argentine the Green Jacket

Other than Anthony Kim, a terrible day for Asians. Kim made a Master's record 11 birdies for today's best round of 65. He also made a double bogey. Katayama was steady all day and shot 73, a little dissapointing. They showed the end of Imada's round on tv and he needed to make an 8 foot knee-knocking par on 18 to make the cut. That was nerve-wracking! If you miss the cut you don't make a penny! By making that putt he gets to play on the weekend and who knows, he could make ALOT of money!

KJ Choi missing the cut is a surprise. He's Asia's best player and has finished as high as 4th at the Masters.

As for the rest, it was a disaster. Marksaeng was the worse. In contention yesterday with a 69 today he shoots 84! Want to see an ugly scorecard? That's waaaay to much yellow.

And then there was Danny Lee, the young phenom from New Zealand who won on the European Tour earlier this year (and didn't make a cent cause he's still an amateur). At the halfway point today he was -2! Then it crashed and burned when he QUINTUPLE bogeyed the Par 4 10th! You don't see that every day.

Oh noes!! Not a QUINTUPLE bogey!

So three guys left in the field. Let's see if they can do some damage tomorrow.

Runway driving lesson causes near disaster

A passenger plane narrowly avoided a crash in the Philippines - after a man teaching his girlfriend to drive sped across an airport runway.

The Cebu Pacific plane, with 80 passengers aboard, briefly touched down at Legazpi airport, but took off again as the van crossed the runway.

"That van could have turned us into a fireball had I not successfully aborted landing," pilot Christopher Nowioki told the Philippine Star.

The newspaper says the culprit was actually the son of the airport manager Frisco Sto. Domingo who has now been sacked

It's thought that the driver may have thought all the flights to the airport were completed for the day, and decided to use the runway to give his girlfriend a driving lesson.

However, a recent increase in the number of scheduled flights, combined with poor visibility, caught him out.

Nice! Asians can't drive in normal conditions, how do you expect them to dodge planes?
