Watch where you put that chopstick!

Li Jingchao learned the hard way -- be careful what you stick up your nose.

The 14-month-old little boy was playing with chopsticks, when his doctor says he fell, with one of the sticks piercing his nose.

"It touched upon the deep area of his brain, four centimeters of the chopstick was inside his skull" Doctor Sun Wei told CNN.

Jingchao's mother, Zhao Guilu didn't see what happened -- she was in another room at the time, but came running when she heard her son crying.

"I was washing dishes... I rushed in and saw him lying on the ground. He couldn't stop crying and I noticed a chopstick stuck in his nose."

She went to a local clinic, but doctors there warned her it was too dangerous to try and remove the chopstick because it may cause massive bleeding. Zhao was frantic and called her husband. A relative offered to drive them from their small village, hundreds of miles to a hospital in Beijing.

That mom is smart. I probably would have just yanked the chopstick out of his nose instead of going to the doctor.

I'm not fit to be a mom huhuhuhuhuhu.

DNA tests for Chinese children

There's good and bad in this. This would put alot of pressure on kids at a young age to be either sporty, musical,or a brain. That's what China needs, more 8 year old gymnasts in the Olympics :)

On the good side it does give parents an idea of where their kid's strength is. Not everyone can be a doctor right? So force feeding a kid biology when a simple frog disection sends them off barfing in the bathroom is not a good idea. Something alot of Chinese-Canadian parents could learn.

KidZania! Kids can do any job

Looks smooth! Better than the typical American broadcast!

Source: Jeffrey Friedl's Blog

KidZania in Nishinomiya (near Kobe, about an hour and a half drive south from Kyoto). is best described as “Vocational School meets Disneyland”... it's a place where kids get to pretend to be all kinds of things.

KidZania is a two-story indoor area filled with more than 70 different “businesses” where the kids can participate as an employee or customer. They can move from business to business, with each event taking from 15 to 30 minutes, although, like Disneyland, much time is spent waiting your turn.

If they participate as an employee, they're paid (in KidZo monetary units), and if they participate as a customer, they must pay. The terms for each “business” are displayed out front... how much pay they'll get for participating, or how much it'll cost to participate.

Auto Repair: Three mechanics standing around. Just like the real thing!

FIRE!

I want to see a food fight!

See the rest of the photos and article here.

I think that's really cool! Kids here in Canada know nothing about what their parents do and can never act out their dreams of being a fireman or an astronaut. Sure there's Take Your Kid To Work Day, which is an absolute nuisance. That's pretty much a day adults get no work done. Is there Career Day at school still? That's a load of BS too. Kids bring their parents to tell the class what they do. Unless the job is interesting like making ice cream, nobody gives a shit. It would be really cool if we had this here! Kids meeting each other and working together for a day? Builds teamwork!

So where's the "oppai" gravure model exhibit? These kids could learn a thing or two about Japan's greatest growing industry :)

Did You Get Your Dad Condoms?

Source: Shanghaist

The more filial amongst us know that Father's Day was this past Sunday. While many of us were giving flowers or chocolate (or in one editor's case, a bottle of 12-year-old Jamesons) for our dad, a 13-year-old Chinese girl gave her single dad a box of condoms as the "ultimate gift for Father's Day.

"Dad,

First of all, Happy Father's Day! I am going to give a very special present today; I hope that you will not be mad at me! Hehe! (Pig head)

I know that you have been working hard in and outside of our house. You have to go on business trips often while taking good care of me. For your health and happiness in life, I bought the newest style of condoms for you! I have seen the same brand that you bought before in your drawer! (Heart)

I hope that you understand my heart! Haha~ Again, Happy Father's Day! I also hope that you will find a pretty girlfriend soon! Hehe~ Relax, I won't tell mom!

Your well-behaved daughter, Wenwen.
June 21st."

Since the photo has been posted online, many netizens have expressed their feelings towards this incident. Some of them resented that the father did not respect his daughter's privacy and posted the letter online; some others are surprised that the child is so precocious. However, most of the people are approved of what this lovely daughter did for her dad,

"Your daughter is very understanding of you! She is afraid that you are lonely and asks you to find a girlfriend, very caring."

"Your daughter wants you to find her a mother.“

"Don't scold your daughter! She is so cute!"

People seem to like what the girl did for her father. However, in most cases, Chinese still have doubts about condoms -- the condoms can surely prevent STD and pregnancy, but does approving condom using mean to support premarital sex?

The father's already been marrying so talking about premarital sex at this stage seems obsolete. Unless the father is going for 18 year old virgins.

A 13-year old even knowing about condoms is good. Some have critizied the Chinese for not knowing enough about sex so the fact that she knows is encouraging.

How did she buy condoms? Do they sell condoms to 13-year olds?

But I was always taught adult business does not concern kids. Remember when you were a kid and if there were guest over to the house you were immediately sent away.

"This is adult business, kids go play in the other room"
"Get out of here, the adults are talking"

In Asian culture there a huge hierarchal difference between adults and children. Even young adults are very nervous when speaking to older people. So I think although cute, it's still inappropriate for kids to encourage their fathers to have sex.

U.S. Births Hint at Bias for Boys in Some Asians

Source: New York Times

The trend is buried deep in United States census data: seemingly minute deviations in the proportion of boys and girls born to Americans of Chinese, Indian and Korean descent.

In those families, if the first child was a girl, it was more likely that a second child would be a boy, according to recent studies of census data. If the first two children were girls, it was even more likely that a third child would be male.

Demographers say the statistical deviation among Asian-American families is significant, and they believe it reflects not only a preference for male children, but a growing tendency for these families to embrace sex-selection techniques, like in vitro fertilization and sperm sorting, or abortion.

New immigrants typically transplant some of their customs and culture to the United States — from tastes in food and child-rearing practices to their emphasis on education and the elevated social and economic status of males. The appeal to immigrants by clinics specializing in sex selection caused some controversy a decade ago.

But a number of experts expressed surprise to see evidence that the preference for sons among Asian-Americans has been so significantly carried over to this country. “That this is going on in the United States — people were blown away by this,” said Prof. Lena Edlund of Columbia University.

Woah woah woah woah... excuse me? New immigrants typically transplant some of their customs and culture to the United States — from tastes in food and child-rearing practices to their emphasis on education and the elevated social and economic status of males but EXPERTS are surprised that Asians prefering boys over girls has carried over? That's the most important one! If people are going to carry on eating rice and praying at the altar then they certainly are carrying on the custom of having boys. If you have no boy, who's going to pray at the altar!? Experts can be so dumb sometimes.

Japanese beer for kids

Source: Baltimore Sun

The Tomomasu company of Japan once made a non-alcoholic drink for kids chock full of the guarana (twice the caffeine of coffee), with enough kick to have the little ones running up the walls.

It didn't sell very well, so they put it in a brown bottle and changed the name to Kidsbeer.

Whoosh ... turning your kid into a kinder-meth-head is much more attractive when it seems like you're getting them drunk. All the chore-doing benefits of kiddie Red Bull combined with the gateway drug priming for later alcoholism.

Phhhhhttt just give kids real beer. It's better for them.

"Olympics girl" now highest grossing Chinese child celebrity

Source: Yahoo

Lin Miaoke, the nine-year-old girl who lip-synced at the Beijing Olympics last year, is currently appearing on TV advertisements promoting a plasma television set. An advertiser revealed that the girl was paid a seven-figure sum to endorse the product; a humongous sum exceeding top Chinese celebrities like Fan Bingbing, Zhao Wei and Zhou Xun who averagely receive around S$1million for endorsements. The figure is also challenging Zhang Ziyi's RMB$10million price.

According to the Beijing advertiser, the plasma TV company chose Lin to endorse their products because her healthy image and social influence are in line with the products. Moreover, the plasma TV mainly targets children and youths with its unique eyesight protection capability; as such Lin is thus a convincing and realistic endorsee.

The girl admitted on her blog that upon wrapping up her scenes in Dream of the Red Chamber, she received the invitation by the Sichuan company and agreed to the endorsement without hesitation. The entire process from the invitation to wrapping up the commercial shoot, only took three days.

When a Chinese reporter called up Lin's father to check if his daughter has truly received a seven-figure endorsement fee, he laughed, "How is that possible? It must be a rumour on the Internet. My daughter's endorsement fee is not that high." However, the man refused to reveal the actual figure that was received.

Ah to be a cute kid. We all remember her in the opening ceremony. Much was made ot the lip-synching but there's no doubt that she's really cute and now making money!

Nine-year-old writes iPhone code

Source: BBC

A nine-year-old Malaysian boy in Singapore has written a painting application for the Apple iPhone.

Lim Ding Wen created the finger painting program, known as Doodle Kids, for his two younger sisters aged three and five.

The program allows iPhone owners to draw images on the handset's touch screen using just their fingers.

The program has been downloaded more than 4,000 times from Apple's iTunes store in less than two weeks.

Some kids are just too smart. I always say in these cases that these something went wrong during the reincarnation process and their minds weren't wiped properly. Unlike my case where I think my mind was over-wiped!
