In Hainan China, there was a camera crew filming with police doing a feature on checkstops. According to an account by journalist Xiao Jiang for Hainan TV news station: On the night of the 20th September I picked up a video camera and went out with a female colleague. We went to Binhai Road near the Haikou Wenhua Hotel to interview police investigating drink drivers at the scene. At around 11:30 at night the police stopped a car suspected of being driven by a drunk driver and carried out a spot check. Xiao Jiang and the female colleague then interviewed the suspected drunk driver.

Suddenly, a woman from the crowd of people watching rushed forward, charged towards Xiao Jiang saying: Your video camera filmed me, why do you want to film me?

China crushes Tomato Garden

The Chinese government officially buried the most infamous (and some would say, successful) software piracy scheme in history when four of people behind the distribution of pirated Microsoft operating systems were jailed and fined for their part in distributing the infamous "Tomato Garden" versions of Windows XP distributed from the tomatolei.com website.

Tomato Garden versions of Windows are like regular Windows with all copy protections bypassed, but were also ineligible for software and security updates distributed by Microsoft, and as anyone who works in internet security is only too aware of, Tomato Garden XP is responsible for millions upon countless millions of rampant unchecked security threats thanks to the complete and utter lack of software updates available to fix Microsoft security vulnerabilities exploited by malware programmers.

So why was Tomato Garden so popular when Microsoft sold legal copies of Windows XP at an extremely competitive price in China? I'll leave it to a cynic, or Chinese software consumer, to answer this one.

Boy drank gasoline to copy his TV heroes

A 14-YEAR-OLD boy drank gasoline for five years to obtain "energy" - just as his idols "Bumble Bee" or "Optimus Prime" do in "Transformers," the Sichuan-based West China Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.

After the boy, in Yibin City, southwest Sichuan Province, had watched the animated TV series, he began to drink gasoline to become a "valiant fighter" like "Optimus Prime," his father told the newspaper.

"He began to drink gasoline five years ago, when we found he liked smelling lighter fuel," he said.

The boy's mother owned a grocery stall, selling small goods such as lighters.

In 2004, she often found lighters missing two or three days after she'd bought them. She later found that her son had been stealing them.

The parents talked to their son and asked him not to do it again. "But afterwards we found our motorcycle's gasoline was always disappearing, and one day when we found the boy had drunk a half bottle of gasoline stolen from the motorcycle, we were too shocked to say anything," the father said.

FIVE years ago? Too shocked to say anything? You're parents! If my boy ever drink gasoline he'll get a quick boot up his ass!

Police urge hybrid car drivers to turn lights on

The police in Koriyama, Fukushima Prefecture will launch a campaign to encourage drivers of hybrid cars to turn on their lights during the day to prevent accidents caused by the quiet engines of such cars, among other reasons.

Starting this month, Koriyama Police Station's patrol cars have been driving with their lights turned on during the daytime. The police were set Wednesday to attend a citizens event aimed at eradicating accidents and call on hybrid car owners to drive with their lights on.

Sales of hybrid cars are rising due to a tax reduction for eco-friendly vehicles. However, it has been pointed out the silent engines used in the hybrid cars--a combination of an electric motor and a gasoline engine--could pose a danger to visually disabled and elderly people who are less likely to notice the approach of a quiet hybrid car.

The Construction and Transport Ministry on July 2 held a committee meeting to discuss accident prevention measures. At the meeting, there were more than 60 reports on potentially dangerous minor accidents.

Toyota Motor Corp., which manufactures the Prius hybrid car, is studying ways of alerting pedestrians about the approach of quiet cars, including through the use of warning beeps.

"Car visibility will be enhanced if vehicle lights are turned on during the daytime," an officer of Koriyama Police Station said. "As the car engines are quiet, this step also will be useful for other cars."

So all the meetings and planning that went into inventing a car, nobody thought about a car bring loud? A car needs to sound like a car so people know it's a car!

A Hindu father from Ohio has filed a complaint with the Justice Department claiming his son was forced to eat a beef taco in the school cafeteria.

Ashish Gandhi says the boy ate the taco at the Academy of World Languages, a public magnet school in Cincinnati. Hindus consider eating beef a sacrilege.

Cincinnati Public Schools attorney Gary Winters told investigators the boy chose the taco himself, and the employee who gave it to him was unaware of his dietary restrictions.

Gandhi, who moved to the U.S. from India in 2007, calls the taco meal an "intentional act of religious bigotry." He filed a separate complaint claiming the school has refused to offer his son services for students who don't speak English.

Woah woah woah. There's an Academy of World Languages? What do they each there? Forced to eat? How do you force anyone to eat anything? It's a cafeteria! The kid should know what looks like meat and what doesn't. It's his religion!

How did the father know that the his kid ate beef? Was he there to witness it? How does the kid even know what beef taste like? If the kid went home and told his dad that he had beef and the kid knew what he was doing right?

So according to the dad, let's say for example I'm the employee. I take the student down to the cafeteria and say "Hey kid, this is all the stuff we have in this wonderful cafeteria, have at her". That's it right? My responsibility is done right? I've offered this wonderful student a meal.

This father wants me to

A) Offer he son food
B) Be aware of what his son can or cannot eat
C) Be able to speak hindi

Does he want me to spoonfeed it to him too? What does he think this is? Wolfgang Puck's Fine Dining? It's a fucking school cafeteria. He's lucky they give the kid any food at all and the fat cafeteria monitor lady (we all had one) doesn't shove it up his throat.

With attitudes like this, he seriously should be sent back home to India. I support deportation.

Exam result "stolen" for official's daughter

A Chinese police official has been arrested for stealing another girl's exam results and passing it off as his daughter's to ensure her a place in college, a newspaper said on Wednesday.

Competition for college places is fierce in China where stories of cheating surface every year. Students pay for leaked exam papers, smuggle in mobile phones and electronic dictionaries, or pay others to take the exam for them.

Wang Zhengrong, formerly of the Public Security Bureau in Shaodong county in the southern province of Hunan, was charged with forging and altering official documents and seals in 2004, the China Youth Daily said.

Since 2004!? Wow. So since 2004 some rich girl is in college (and probably graduated college stealing someone elses' results) and some poor village girl is wandering around pondering how she failed that test.

Actually this being China, I'm surprised the dad was arrested at all. I'm sure this happens all the time to alot of students. If you have money or your father is in a position of power, you'll get places.

Death will come soon for Jiang Yong. A corrupt local planning official with a taste for the high life, Yong solicited money from businessmen eager to expand in China's economic boom.

Showering gifts on his mistress, known as Madam Tang, the unmarried official took more than £1 million in bribes from entrepreneurs wanting permission to build skyscrapers on land which had previously been protected from development.

But Yong, a portly, bespectacled figure, was caught by the Chinese authorities during a purge on corrupt local officials last year.

He confessed and was sentenced to death. China executed 1,715 people last year, so one more death would hardly be remarkable.

But there will be nothing ordinary about Yong's death by lethal injection. Unless he wins an appeal, he will draw his final breath strapped inside a vehicle that has been specially developed to make executions more cost-effective and efficient.

In chilling echoes of the 'gas-wagon' project pioneered by the Nazis to slaughter criminals, the mentally ill and Jews, this former member of the China People's Party will be handcuffed to a so-called 'humane' bed and executed inside a gleaming new, hi-tech, mobile 'death van.'

After trials of the mobile execution service were launched quietly three years ago - then hushed up to prevent an international row about the abuse of human rights before the Olympics last summer - these vehicles are now being deployed across China.

The number of executions is expected to rise to a staggering 10,000 people this year (not an impossible figure given that at least 68 crimes - including tax evasion and fraud - are punishable by death in China).

Very barbaric but I know some here in Canada who would support it. They are criminals afterall and people here always complain that jails are too soft and we let criminals back onto the street too easy.

Court Clears Woman Who Chased Robber to Death

A Chinese court has ruled that a woman acted in self-defense when she drove her car in chasing three robbers, knocking them off their motorcycle causing the death of one of the robbers, the Guangzhou Daily reported Thursday.

The report said the robbers had followed Miss Long to her garage one early morning last July in Shunde district of Foshan city in southern Guangdong province. As she was out on the road and waited for a traffic light, two men smashed Miss Long's car window and snatched a handbag from the passenger's seat that contained over 80,000 yuan in cash and other documents.

The robbers then attempted to escape by jumping on a motorbike driven by a third accomplice who was waiting nearby. Miss Long sped after the robbers before knocking over the motorcycle with her car, according to eye-witnesses.

One robber died on the spot from the fall and two others were later arrested by police, who also found the stolen items and some iron drills that were used in the robbery.

The Foshan Intermediate Court ruled on Wednesday that although the robbers had started to escape after their criminal act, they were still within sight of the victim. Thus the court considered the robbery to be still in progress and ruled that Miss Long's chase and subsequent charging of the motorcycle was a case of justifiable defense.

The court also sentenced the two surviving robbers to 11 to 12 years in prison plus fines.

Seems like a strange decision to me. How can you chase someone down with your car and have it be self-defense? If you are being robbed and you hit the robber in the head and kill him, then you're defending yourself. But if the robbery has already happened and you've made a conscious decision to chase the robber while he's fleeing, then you're attacking. What if the woman had hit another car or an innocent bystander. That's not self-defense!

Chicago laundromat manager battered, bruised, but not beaten

In a West Side laundromat, there's a man with little patience for loiterers—a frail 73-year-old veteran of the South Korean army who's stubborn enough to not be afraid.

When gangbangers and dope fiends wander in from Chicago Avenue, he yells at them in a mix of English and Korean, "Go out! Go out!"

If they listen, fine. If they don't, Ki Han picks up a phone in the back office and calls police.

On Monday night a man came into Spinning Bubble and confronted Han, accusing him of snitching. Han told the man to get out and then, said Han and the laundromat's owner, the man broke a whiskey bottle on a table and threatened Han with it.


Han said he went to the office and was just about to pick up the phone when the man attacked him. A police report stated Bennie Hale, 21, a convicted drug dealer, "punched Han in the face, causing bruising and abrasions, and leaving the man unable to see out of his left eye." Hale then destroyed computer equipment in the office and threw a microwave on top of Han, police and the laundromat's owner said.

I guess when you're 73 years old and have seen it all, nothing much scares you! Gotta love the sunglasses!

The content of the article doesn't surprise me. I know there have been gangs coming out of Forest Lawn for the last ten years. Everyone in Calgary knows it.

What startled me in the incredible detail by the police and the newspaper of all the names of participants and all of the details that have happened since 1999. We know about the gang member, about the families, when attacks happened when these two sides met. Everything is known and out in the open. What do the police do with this information? Nothing. What good is it that this information is in the Herald if police do nothing about it. Is there going to be another article in 20 years twice as long detailing the same thing. It's the biggest cover up in the city and will continue to be for a very long time.

Police in India's Haryana state believe they have found a novel way to tackle a plague of mice infesting official records and destroying evidence.

They have started using a pair of domesticated white rats to scare the mice away.

Rodents are a huge problem in India, consuming tonnes of grain intended for human consumption every year.

The experiment has now attracted the attention of animal experts, who think it could be a solution to the problem.
