So in school there's an assignment to teach kids about 1870s America. This particular one is about Chinese railway workers and what they would write in a letter back home.

So the student answered appropriately I think!

My living conditions here are poor.

In our six years of middle school studies, we study Chinese, maths, English, geography, physics, politics, history, chemistry and biology (not including PE, music and other subsidiary subjects), all of which are mandatory. We can not choose what we are interested in. Also, the studies are memory based and test oriented, which means we have to remember tons of theories, concepts, terms in order to pass exams.

Woman, 48, goes back to school

A 48-year-old woman has been admitted as a pupil to a junior school in China.

Xie Zuojin, of Fengkou town, runs a pharmacy but said her illiteracy was making life difficult and losing her business.

Staff in the admissions office at the town's Second Elementary School were amazed when she turned up to register for lessons.

"We suggested she study at home and we provide her with teaching materials while occasionally dispatching a teacher to give private lessons, but she refused, insisting school was the best place for her to study," a teacher told Chutian Metropolis.

See? No home schooling for her! I once read that the literacy rate in China was less than 10% a long time ago. Now that they've switches from traditional writing to simplified, the literacy rate must have increased but still not by much.

Glad to see this women going back to school to learn again!

Archer Has An Arrow Escape

A Chinese schoolboy had an amazing escape after being shot through the eye with an arrow by a pal.

An x-ray shows the arrow through Liu Cheong's skull.

Teachers at Jiutai City school believe the young archers were practicing on their own when the accident happened.

The arrow went through 11-year-old Liu Cheong's eye socket, completely through his head and was only stopped by the back of his skull.

"If the arrow had been shot with just a bit more force, it would have come out the back of his head," said doctors at Jida Hospital in Changchun, eastern China.

The boy only survived because the arrow miraculously missed his brain.

I remember archery in school. You stood there and shot at a target miles away!

A School on a Cliff

The school in Gulu village, Sichuan province, lies halfway up a mountain and climbing up from the base takes five hours.

The elementary school has only one teacher who has been there for 26 years, reports the West China City Daily.

Villagers say going to school is very dangerous for the children, since the path is only 1ft 4ins wide at the narrowest point and has a sheer drop on one side.

Walking along the narrow, zigzagging path also makes the children feel dizzy, they say.

This is pretty stupid. How can a country like China not doing anything about this. Build the kids another school! On some level land! In Canada, parents complain and attack the school board of education if the school is in another neighbourhood let alone on a frickin mountain!

The question of identity

I was a victim of this being an average student. Other Asian students mocked me and even my mom was disappointed.

So a couple of tips from me to you.

If you're a parent, advise but don't push your kids and most importantly don't use your kids as a tool to brag to other parents.

If you're a smart kid it wouldn't hurt to lend a hand every now and then to your fellow Asian instead of teasing and mocking. Karma is a bitch you know.
