Look For a Star (HK)

An entertaining fairy tale romance that has the requisite pretty people and pretty sights, but is weakened by a script too in love with its central theme and cheesy moments. But for a Lunar New Year flick, it’s much better than All’s Well Ends Well.

Fit Lover (China)

Interminable Lunar New Year film that misses the mark almost completely. The comedy is boring, the romance uninteresting, and the drama disturbingly funny. The parade of male stars is somewhat diverting, but Karena Lam oddly is not. A big hit in China, which is pretty frightening. If you switch around the vowels in the title you can call this film Fit Liver or Fat Lover.

My Dear Enemy (Korea)

A gimmicky road film between two ex-lovers turns into something surprising and emotionally poignant, thanks to Jeon Do-Yeon and Ha Jeong-Woo's performances, as well as Ad-Lib Night director Lee Yoon-Ki's assured direction.

Citizen King (HK)

A surprising, funny and even affecting entertainment industry satire, Citizen King makes the most of its meta references, and star-director Johnson Lee does well in both his roles. The rare Hong Kong indie that transcends, or at least sidesteps its obvious pretentiousness.
