Kid torches his own house, OVER GUNDAM

A Japanese man has admitted to burning down his family home after his mother threw away some of his favourite robot toys from the "Gundam" animation series.

Yoshifumi Takabe, aged 30 and living with his mother, said he had become suicidal after she dumped some of the robots, of which he had enough to fill 300 boxes stacked to the ceiling, the Sports Nippon said Wednesday.

The blaze on August 9 last year completely destroyed their two-storey wooden house in Kasai, Hyogo prefecture, but no one was injured.

"The Gundam figures are like the partners I spend my life with," he reportedly said after pleading guilty at western Kobe's District Court. "I wanted to die with them in a fire if they were to be thrown out."

The Mobile Suit Gundam series, based on an animation TV series which started in the late 1970s, is about space wars fought by gigantic robots.

I won't totally blame the kid here. Parents just can't just ignore things and let it get out of control. 300 boxes! Obviously he like Gundam! Perhaps mom should have said something at 50 boxes? 100 boxes? If it's a concern, put a stop to it. It's been 30 years! At this point, it's too late and drastic actions will result in drastic responses.

Lorry driver builds himself a Lamborghini

A Chinese lorry driver has built himself a Lamborghini supercar in his spare time - for just £2,000.

It took Chen Jinmiao, 25, of Binzhou, Hunan province, a year to build the replica sportscar, reports the Red Net.

"I downloaded the drawings from the internet, and then bought materials from the market," he said.

Chen, who has only a basic school education, had always dreamt of owning a Lamborghini but knew he would never be able to afford a real one.

It is a fully working car - and even has the famous wing doors - but its top speed is a little over 50mph, compared to a real Lamborghini's 200mph-plus.

Chen said his family and friends tried to discourage him from building the car.

"But they couldn't stop me, as I did it all with my own savings," he explained.

He is now waiting to see whether traffic officials will give him permission to drive the car on the road.

"If they don't, I can have it for my collection at home," he added.

Holy crap, £2,000 is alot of money that he's been saving up. A whole year!
That's a really cool project but there's not way he can really drive that thing very far. Just around the neighbourhood? It looks great but doesn't look safe, no bumper, bad wheels. Can it even break at high speeds? I like his attitude though, that's a wonderful lifetime collection to have :)

Tokyo Toy Show 2009

Once again, we made it out to the Tokyo Toy Show for its 2009 incarnation (see our coverage of 2007 and 2008) and weren’t disappointed. A bit different than what we expected, but economics and other factors are changing the market a bit perhaps. Some old favorites, some new surprises, but still a fun toy show with lots to see.

What’s clear is that there’s still a huge production trend of toys that are used for cooking real food. We used to call those “appliances” back in the day, but if you make them pink, small, and plastic enough they pass as toys apparently.

Hello Kitty Mini Fan, Designed to Look (and Be ) Cool

Among the abundance of Hello Kitty branded products, a few stand on their own as demonstrations of creative design. The Hello Kitty Mini Fan is one such design triumph.

It's good to know Sanrio, creator and owner of the mega-successful Hello Kitty brand, isn't simply laying back, slapping an HK sticker on any old product, and collecting their licensing fee. Not that they NEVER do that, but with the Hello Kitty Mini Fan they at least appear to have made a conscious effort to bring something original and appealing to the table.



The fan cage has been shaped into the form of Hello Kitty's face - which in itself much have required significant investment in tooling for such a niche product.

Applying colored plastic eyes, nose and trademark red hair bow completes the classic HK look. It should be noted that there is NOTHING pink anywhere on the fan but the lack doesn't detract from the tried & tested Hello Kitty charm.

More design creativity comes into play down below, where a pair of cat feet support the fan and include a mechanism that allows you to change the angle of the fan as desired.

The Hello Kitty Mini Fan is a plug-in (100 volts) appliance, not battery powered which in this writer's opinion may be a mistake.

According to the official Sanrio press release, the fan weighs 270 grams (about 9.5 ounces), measures 6.5" wide x 4.5" tall x 6" in depth, and is sticker priced at 2,625 yen or around $26 - use your Hello Kitty credit card

That's SO CUTE! I could use one as summer is coming up and it will get very hot!
