South Korea's Ryu wins playoff, captures U.S. Women's Open

So Yeon Ryu defeated Hee Kyung Seo in a a rain-delayed Women's US Open in a 3-hole playoff. Neither player looked like winning after the 2nd round as they were both at +3 while the leaders Miyazatos were both -5. But the third round is always moving day and by the time the Final Round started they were back in contention. Seo made 4 birdies in a row from 6-9 to take the lead and end the day at -3. Ryu was at -2 and needed to come back today and find 1 birdie with 3 holes left. She made birdie on the final hole and then made two more birdies in the playoff to seal victory. A great day for Korea.

Two pretty girls too made for the most beautiful playoff match in the history of playoff matches. And all that bullshit about Korean players forced to learn English was just that, bullshit. Both players did countless interviews live on NBC and ESPN. Seo was in the booth while she was waiting to see if anyone would catch her Monday morning and did an interview before and after the playoff. Both players represented Korea and the LPGA very proudly.

LPGA has long been in decline because it doesn't have a Tiger Woods, a star that will the casual fan to tune in. Some have blamed the million Koreans that are now on tour making Americans not watch. I tend to agree with this. People tune out not because the players are Korean but because there is no dominant Korean. In the days of Se-Ri Pak she was the one dominant Korean and was very popular as she battled the like of Sorenstam and Webb week after week.

But now, one week it's In-Young Kim, another week it's Song-Hee Kim, another week Jee-Young Lee? Have I lost you? I don't blame you, I've forgotten their names already too.

So now the LPGA has hope! There's a new star from Taiwan who will beat these Koreans.
Yani Tseng has a big lead at the British Open which would mean her 2nd major title of the season. She is apparently Sorenstam's understudy and is looking to dominate. Finally a star to rise to the top. There's one problem though. She looks like a fucking dude! LPGA can't market that!



Not good, this might be the death of the LPGA is this dude keeps winning.

Japan's women flirting for cash

While the recession is driving some women in the U.S. into the sex industry, it's pushing Japan's young ladies into the less extreme but nevertheless historically taboo work of hostessing. We aren't talking about simply standing at the front of a restaurant and politely seating customers; the country's hostesses are professional flirts often paid big bucks to party, chat up customers and look pretty in gentlemen's clubs. (And, depending on who you ask, they are sometimes pressured into sex for money.)

Paying anywhere from $100,000 to $300,00o a year, they are "among the most lucrative jobs available to women" in Japan, according to a trend piece in the New York Times. Things weren't so great for women before the economic collapse -- nearly 70 percent in their early 20s held precarious positions with scant benefits -- and now they're in dire straights: "More women from a diversity of backgrounds are looking for hostess work," Kentaro Miura, a club manager in Tokyo, told the Times. The upshot: These gigs are becoming wildly competitive.

No surprise there. What's puzzling, though, is that reporter Hiroko Tabuchi also ties the recession to the fact that hostesses are "gaining respectability and even acclaim." He summarizes the situation dramatically: "Japan’s worst recession since World War II is changing mores." Certainly the recession is pushing some to consider work they wouldn't have otherwise, but it's seems a stretch to link that desperation to hostesses' rising cultural stock.

The part about girls not getting the jobs they want during a recession and having to do something else. For example, I can't find a job as an accountant or in the oil industry so now I have to clean house in a bikini. I get that.

What I don't get is, if Japan is in it's worse recession since WWII, what guy has the money to pay for these thrills like a hostess and maybe more. Are the top echelon guys in Japan still filthy rich while the rest are looking for work? Sad that they spend this foolishly while others can't make money.

THE MOSUO MATRIARCHY

How does a matriarchy really work? Argentinian writer Ricardo Coler decided to find out and spent two months with the Mosuo in southern China. "Women have a different way of dominating," the researcher told SPIEGEL ONLINE.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Mr. Coler, you are from Argentina, where macho behavior is not exactly unheard of. What was it like living for two months in the matriarchical society of the Mosuo in China?

Coler: I wanted to know what happened in a society where women determine how things are done. How do women tick when, from birth onwards, their societal position allows them to decide everything? We men know what a man is, we put that together quickly -- but what constitutes a woman? Although, I didn't get any wiser on that point.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Is Mosuo society a paradise for feminists?

Coler: I had expected to find an inverse patriarchy. But the life of the Mosuo has absolutely nothing to do with that. Women have a different way of dominating. When women rule, it's part of their work. They like it when everything functions and the family is doing well. Amassing wealth or earning lots of money doesn't cross their minds. Capital accumulation seems to be a male thing. It's not for nothing that popular wisdom says that the difference between a man and a boy is the price of his toys.
