A Chili Sauce to Crow About

Source: NY Times

AFTER-HOURS calls to Huy Fong Foods, here in the suburbs of the San Gabriel Valley east of Los Angeles, are intercepted by an answering machine. One recent day, 14 messages were blinking when Donna Lam, the operations manager, hit “play.”

A woman told of smearing Huy Fong’s flagship product, Tuong Ot Sriracha (Sriracha Chili Sauce), on multigrain snack chips. A man proclaimed the purée of fresh red jalapeños, garlic powder, sugar, salt and vinegar to be “the bomb,” and thanked Ms. Lam’s employers for “much joy and pleasure.”

Another caller, hampered by a slight slur, botched the pronunciation of the product name before asking whether discount pricing might be available. Finally, he blurted, “I love rooster sauce!” (A strutting rooster, gleaming white against a backdrop of the bright red sauce, dominates Huy Fong’s trademark green-capped clear plastic squeeze bottles.)

“I guess it goes with alcohol,” deadpanned Ms. Lam, who, like David Tran, the 64-year-old founder of Huy Fong and creator of its sauce, is both proud of the product’s popularity and flummoxed by fans’ devotion.

The lure of Asian authenticity is part of the appeal. Some American consumers believe sriracha (properly pronounced SIR-rotch-ah) to be a Thai sauce. Others think it is Vietnamese. The truth is that sriracha, as manufactured by Huy Fong Foods, may be best understood as an American sauce, a polyglot purée with roots in different places and peoples.

I don't like hot sauce that much and I can take a little dab in a bowl of PHO. So there's always a bottle of Sriracha in my fridge :)

20-year-old crowned most beautiful transsexual

Source: China Daily

Resplendent in a figure-hugging grey and black dress, Sorrawee Nattee wept tears of joy after being crowned Thailand's most beautiful transsexual at a unique pageant.

Sorrawee took the top prize at Miss Tiffany's Universe 2009 in the beach resort of Pattaya, beating off 29 other transsexuals and receiving a small Honda car, and 100,000 baht ($2,860) in cash on Friday night.

"I'm very excited," the 20-year-old from Thailand's southern Songkhla province said, touching the glimmering winner's crown with disbelieving fingers.

She appeared overwhelmed by hordes of photographers, camera crews and well-wishers, the scene played out before a live television audience of 15 million people.

In a nation obsessed with beauty pageants and famous for its sexual tolerance, this elaborate contest is taken every bit as seriously as the more traditional competitions.

The pageant had categories for Best Costume, Miss Photogenic and even Miss Unlimited Sexy Star. Dresses ranged from flowing white ensembles to shimmering red numbers and pink miniskirts. High heels were a must.

All contestants were born men, and organizers said they hoped to raise public awareness of transgendered issues.

I would think that winning the Thailand version of this event is more difficult than winning the world event later in the year. Kind of like being the Canadian curling champion or the Chinese ping pong champion :D

Thailand Cigarette Warnings

Source: chinaSMACK

Cigarette warning are nothing new. Here's one from Canada:

However Thailand has taken it to a new extreme. Look at these!

That's pretty scary! Think people will quit? Probably not.

If I was the government I would put this on cigarette packages:

"Smoking takes inches off your dick".

Nick Khun gets exempted from Thai Army

Source: K Town

Male group 2PM’s Thai member Nick Khun has been given the Army exemption.

Khun had flown back to Thailand for the physical examination and application for his Army enlistment end-March. Fans were anxious about the results to his application and they can then heaved a sigh of relief because Nick Khun has been officially exempted from Army duties.

In Thailand, males who reached the age of 18 will have to go undergo a physical examination before they get enlisted into the Army. But the examination board also have their own set of exemptions for males for fall under their exemptions criteria.

For those who passed their physical examination, they will also go through a round of drawing lots and 20% of them will be selected for their Army duties.

Khun did an interview before the results for his application came out in Thailand, “If my luck is bad, I will go back to Korea for work (album preparation), if I get picked I will serve the Army for my country. Even if I am not selected for Army duties, I will work hard and make Thailand more known in other places.”

“Because enlisting for the Army is as important in Korea, JYP had went ahead and allowed for me to take part in the drawing of lots. If I need to, I will stop my work in Korea and stay in Thailand to serve the Army.”

But it seems he doesn’t have to worry about that anymore.

He would have been the wussiest, girliest soldier in the Thai army. I think this is why he got discharged. That guy would have been the laughing stock of the army. Look at how pasty he is! And are those red polka dot boxers!? Buwahahahahaha.

Are any of you in the army or have been in the army? You would have had a field day with this guy!

Can't believe some girls find this guy HAWT. YUCK!

Thai 'Spider-Man' to the rescue

Source: BBC

An unusual disguise has helped a Bangkok fireman rescue an eight-year-old boy who had climbed on to a third-floor window ledge, Thai police say.

The firefighter dressed up as the comic book superhero Spider-Man in order to coax the boy, who is autistic, from his dangerous perch.

Police said teachers had alerted the fire station after the boy began crying and climbed out of a classroom window.

Kids don't listen to adults, teachers or parents. They only listen to comic-book heroes!

Your Holiness, meet the Condom King

Source: Dothan Eagle via @luckyinthailand

Branching off Bangkok’s bustling Sukhumvit Road is a quiet, narrow street, Soi 12, that’s a sort of refuge from the seedy and exotic offerings on the main drag. In that tranquility, it’s easy to forget Bangkok’s reputation as a destination for sex tourism. Then you see the sign for Mechai Viravaidya’s restaurant: Cabbages and Condoms.

The theme is near to his heart. Mechai, known locally as the Condom King, has been a vocal proponent of condom use for years, first as a means of population control and later, as HIV infection quickly spread through Thailand, as a weapon in the war on AIDS.

Mechai has held posts in Thai government; as minister of tourism, he was instrumental in the promotion of Thailand’s widely touted 100 Percent Condom Campaign, which has been credited with the developing country’s decline in the rate of sexually transmitted HIV infection.

Mechai should request an audience with Pope Benedict XVI. It would promise to be an enlightening evening.

In Thailand, Vegetarians Find a Place at the Table

Source: NY Times

FIRECRACKERS rained down like hail, filling the street with sulfurous billows. Young men, dressed in white, waved towels, trying to keep the explosives away from the black-faced god seated in the ornate sedan chair that some of them held aloft. There, in the center of it all, Phuket Town fell away; the formerly opulent Portuguese-Chinese mansions and rows of boxy concrete shops faded as the hot morning sun swooned before clouds of acrid smoke.

Participants in Phuket’s annual Festival of the Nine Emperor Gods follow a strict set of moral guidelines during its course, refraining from drinking alcohol, fibbing, killing, gossiping and, among other things, eating meat. Yet if the festival is known at all outside the region, it is for this small detail: In English, it is usually called the Phuket Vegetarian Festival.

I know being vegetarian is a good health choice but it always make me lack energy. Perhaps it's a habit? I try to follow Buddhism and eat vegetarian four times a month (on the 1st, 2nd, 15th and 16th of the lunar calendar) but I always feel so weak those days.

Thai website to protect the king

Source: BBC

The government in Thailand has set up a special website urging people to inform on anyone criticizing the monarchy.

It has also established an internet security centre to co-ordinate the blocking of websites deemed offensive to the monarchy.

On its first day of operation the centre banned nearly 5,000 websites.

The Ministry of Information had already blocked many thousands of sites, but that work is now being accelerated by the new centre.

It's starting to feel stranger and stranger to worship a figurehead in 2009. In these times when everyone is struggling to be innovative, it's weird to worship a person just born into a position and never worked a day in their life.

It's also strange to have such censorship still in today's world. People who don't like the king should be able to express it in blogs or media. Everyone including the king should be accountable and not just get a free ride.

This isn't 1900!

Movie Reviews - January 18, 2009

Source: LoveHKFilm

There are quite a few to start the new year.

Lady Cop and Papa Crook (HK)

Long-delayed comedy starring Sammi Cheng and Eason Chan is an odd and somewhat unfathomable mixed bag. A confusing plot, poor characters, and ill-fitting performances combine to make this one of the bigger recent disappointments out of Hong Kong. Clearly, this was a different - and probably better - film before the Mainland censors cut it to shreds.

Youtube Link

Tactical Unit - Comrades in Arms
(HK)

An entertaining if minor genre entry, Comrades in Arms proves be much better than its fellow PTU spinoff, the shot-on-video The Code. For a low budget Hong Kong movie, Comrades in Arms impresses, and director Law Wing-Cheong does his producer Johnnie To proud. A solid Milkyway Image film.

Youtube Link

Ong Bak 2 (Thailand)

Story-wise, Ong Bak 2 is as routine as you can imagine, but the action more than compensates. As an action star, Tony Jaa is currently without peer, and Ong Bak 2 serves up enough surprise, impact and style to satiate any fan of martial arts cinema. The ending is a little disappointing, though.

Love Story (Singapore)

This Singaporean contribution to Andy Lau’s Focus First Cuts Film series is undeniably stylish and visually impressive. Too bad it’s a complete turkey.

Bonus:

Fist of Fury (HK)

It's a Bruce Lee movie - 'nuff said.

Doesn't anyone look out for the little people!? You never know who will be most affected by poltical situations.

The go-go bars are empty and sex is on sale at half price as Bangkok's infamous red light districts suffer from a blockade of the capital's airports.

"It's high season, but now it's like low season," said Nan, a scantily-clad hostess at one deserted nightspot in the Thai capital's notorious Patpong area.

Riding From Singapore To Thailand

Source: Pedal! Damnit!

Hardcore cyclist Ben, from the blog, Pedal! Damnit!, recently completed his first 1000km unsupported solo bike ride from Singapore to Thailand via the East Coast of Malaysia, during the month of Ramadan.

To be exact, he rode 1021.6 km (638.5 miles) and climbed 2195 m (7200 ft), for 14 days, on his fully loaded 1991 Bridgestone MB-3 bicycle.

I'm tired just reading about it. Looking at some of the pictures looks like he got hurt along the way too. Make sure you check out each day. Some of the pictures taken are visually stunning.
