Best Halloween Costume 2008

What a wonderful costume that I found while reading Metrodad

The only time we worried about possibly offending someone was when we ran into a group of Chinese tourists. As the fifteen of them passed the Peanut, BossLady and I tepidly held our breaths. At first, they seemed very serious and looked at the Peanut very closely. When she turned around and they saw her fake birth certificate for the first time, we were absolutely sure they were going to be offended. So imagine our surprise when they suddenly started laughing hysterically and asked, through their interpreter, whether they could take photos of her. Naturally, we let out a sigh of relief and obliged.

I'm very glad there was no trouble and that the tourist found humour and played along. I wonder how people in China reacted to the original stories. I'm sure they are proud of their athletes but are embarrassed about the whole under aged issue.

Peeping Tom

That's it? $8000?

I think in Canada you can get a maximum of 5 years in prison for being a peeping tom which falls under the charge of Voyerism.

Get Out And Vote!

A message for all you USians out there. Make sure you vote!

Here's a video telling you why you need to vote!

My parents are guilty of this. They have hardly voted in the 20 years they have been eligible to vote. They say it's because of the Canadian Parliament system that turns them off.

They say "I don't even know my candidate. I like his party but it's ridiculous that he doesn't even put up any signs or come to my house. He could be a fucking toilet bowl for all I know. I'm not voting! *grumble grumble*.

But if they were American (especially in a race this important and this exciting) they would definitely vote directly for the President.

Hanging Dummy

Source: Ananova

I've done marketing before and even on my worst and most evil-thinking days I couldn't even think of a idea like this. This is just pure evil.

Jiang Chengpu, the creative director behind the ad, says the aim was to catch people's attention, not to terrify them.

"We are making fun of the depressing stock market here. And the place the mannequin is hanging is right next to the stock index line," he said.

People committing suicide because of the stock market is no laughing matter. The stock market seems to crash every decade and I know many sad stories of people losing it all and committing suicide.. sometimes even murder-suicide!

In a reference to the global financial crisis, it reads: "It's better to invest money here than put it into the stock market."

All of sudden the ING "SAVE YOUR MONEY" ads don't seem so bad.

No Palin Costumes Please!

DO NOT dress up as Sarah Palin if you're an Asian girl (or guy for that matter) cause you wouldn't want Sarah Palin dressed up like Chun Li.

Fair is fair. We always complain about bad Asian costumes around this time of year.
A Palin costume is just as bad so don't do it!

Reluctant Japanese groom sets hotel on fire

Source: Reuters

Ok this is just fucking stupid and selfish.
Why would a man..

a) see another woman while married

b) marry another woman while married

c) spend money to reserve the hotel and invite the guests

d) setting the hotel on fire causing damage and possible injury to people

Did it finally JUST dawn on him that this was a bad idea?
This is as selfish an act I've ever seen. They should just lock him up before he tries to marry someone else and burn another hotel down.

I've added The Minority Militant to the blogroll.

I've read the posts about enterainment and politics and it's very fair and amusing.

I'm Fat

Source: foodarazzi.com

Asian-American? You may be fatter than you think.

We can't fight it. The bar keeps getting lower and lower.

Turns out that Asian Americans should aim for a BMI of 23, not 25. The explanation? Asian Americans are “fatter” at a lower BMI than Caucasian Americans. This translates to an increased risk of diabetes and other health problems at lower weights.

So we're all fat.

McCain Supported For Being a Hero

Source: LA Times

There have been many many articles about McCain and the word "gook"
Asians seem to be outraged except one group. Vietnamese-Americans.

If the slur was so bad wouldn't the Vietnamese be up in arms protesting.
They're not because they hate the North Vietnamese that McCain was referring too as much as anyone.

I keep hearing "McCain is racist against Asians by using that term"
That's ridiculous. You can't be racist against Asians by using 1 term. Asians is such a broad term you would need many slurs and many negative actions to be racist.

Maybe the other Asians should lay off throwing racist accusations around eh? The Vietnamese are not insulted and you shouldn't be either.

La Barge honoured for work in fighting hate crimes

We have to honour people who do good whenever we get the chance.
Often we curse police when they give us a ticket or are in the way or blow their siren for no reason to run a red light. We've all done it. Ok at least I have.

I may or may not have reported about Asian fisherman being toppled over in Ontario while fishing on a peer a few months ago.

This is just one of the hate-crimes that Le Barge has fought to keep York a safe area.

And for this I salute him.

Kim Ng, baseball pioneer

Kim Ng is the assistant GM of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kim_Ng

As you see she's broken many barriers and continuing to advance in the baseball world. This week she was one of 8 candidates for the vacant Seattle Mariners GM job but I knew it would be a long shot. The Mariners finished near bottom of the American League with a big payroll. There's alot of dead money in that organization with guys like Sexson and Beltre not fulfilling their huge contracts. It was clear to me that they needed an experienced GM to blow this team up and start from scouting and the draft.

Kim Ng didn't get the job. It was clear she wasn't experienced enough as she is an executive and not a scout (which is what the Mariners need).

Then I run into these asinine comments from Angry Asian Man:

Aw man. Man! After all the hope and hype, it looks like Kim Ng will not be the Seattle Mariners' new general manager. On Wednesday, Jack Zduriencik was named the team's new GM.

Who the heck is Jack Zduriencik? And how the hell do you pronounce his name? Zduriencik has been with the Milwaukee Brewers organization for nine years, most recently serving as their vice president and spec.... zzzzzz.

Sorry. I've lost interest. My level of curiosity concerning upper management hiring in Major League Baseball just took a massive nosedive. I guess we'll have to wait a little longer to see baseball's first female, Asian American general manager.

I'm sorry buddy but using your own words: THAT RACIST. Making fun of someones name isn't nice you know.

And either you're a baseball fan and you're not. You can't just watch Asians. Are you watching the World Series in full or are you just searching the internet to see if Iwamura made headlines and then wank off to it? I got Philly to win the World Series and the series is tied 1-1 now. Hopefully this will improve the dismal ratings and people will tune into a great series.

I want to see Asian women succeeding on merit and not given a big job because of who they are. She's just not ready. She's 40 years old and needs more experience scouting high school and college players. She's not the GM the Mariners are looking for right now but jusr being a candidate and being interviewed in an amazing accomplisment.

And who is Jack Zduriencik you say?

Here's a resume

Jack Zduriencik file
The new Mariners executive vice president and general manager will be introduced at a news conference Friday at Safeco Field.

Age: 57.

Name is pronounced: zur-EN-sik.

Coaching career: Football and baseball coach, Austin Peay (1975-77); Clairton High School (Pittsburgh, 1977-80); Tarpon Springs (Fla.) High School (1980-82).

New York Mets: Area scout, 1983-89; national crosschecker, 1990, 1994-95; director, minor-league operations, 1995-98; special assistant to the GM, 1998.

Pittsburgh Pirates: Director of scouting, 1991-93.

Los Angeles Dodgers: Director, international operations, 1998-99.

Milwaukee Brewers: Director of scouting, 1999-2006; special assistant to the GM/director amateur scouting, 2006-08; vice president, special assistant to the GM for player personnel, 2008.

Halls of Fame: Pennsylvania American Legion Hall of Fame, Lawrence County (Pa.) Hall of Fame.

Education: Bachelor's degree in education from California University of Pennsylvania and a master's degree in physical education from Austin Peay State University.

Oh I forgot, you fell asleep already. I won't bore you with any more details.

I'll still keep my eye on Kim Ng. I hope she gets a GM job within 10 years but it will be a tough struggle. She has to stay with a classy organization like the Dodgers and keep learning.

Stealing The Election Already?

Source: ABC 13 Houston

Doesn't make sense. The incumbent was a Democrat Vietnamese guy so why would the Vietnamese community vote en masse for the Republican candidate who's white.

And I love how the black guy in the video is saying "It's a misunderstanding, they were just going over the candidates and parties speaking in Vietnamese"

How does he understand!? :)

And what's with American voting booths where you can HELP someone vote?

Badugi!

I discovered a new card game today called BADUGI!
I believe it was originated in Korea and know I know why Koreans are always frustrated.

It's an extremely frustrating game. You have 4 cards in your hand. You have to make the smallest hand possible without pairs or same suits. So the hand shown in the picture A234 with the 4 different suits is the best possible hand.

I played it a bit and got nowhere. I would have A23 and keep drawing pairs or big cards.

Plus you have no idea what other people are drawing to so there's no strategy to it. Whoever has the most horseshoes up their ass and draws the right card wins.

It's an awful game!
It's too hard!

North Korea set to make 'major announcement'

Source: MSNBC

Also:

TOKYO - North Korea has ordered its diplomats abroad to be on standby for an "important announcement" that could be about the health of its leader Kim Jong Il, a Japanese newspaper said.

Quoting several unidentified sources, the Yomiuri report Saturday said North Korea had told its diplomats to refrain from traveling to be ready for the announcement. The order was probably issued several days ago, it said.

The announcement could be about Kim's health or North Korea's relations with neighboring South Korea, it said.

The report gave no further details. Japanese Foreign Ministry officials could not be reached for comment late Saturday.

Asian Americans urged: Choose a party

Source: Whittier Daily News

"I think that when Asian American voters check the box `decline to state', they lose their power," Assemblyman Mike Eng, D-El Monte said. "I love it when Asian Americans choose one party because they become more effective in their impact."

This is one of the dumber things I've ever heard. I'm sure Mr. Eng would LOVE it if Asians just blindly joined his party and voted for him all the time.

I really enjoy the fact that Asians in general do not BLOCK VOTE. They don't vote for a candidate just because he's Asian. They have to survey the issues and pick the best candidate. You can see that in one of my previous posts where the Vietnamese community in San Jose is recalling a Vietnamese-American councilwoman.

People choose parties and based on good candidates. And this can change from year to year. And you cannot be totally conservative or totally liberal on all issues.

For example. I'm conversative on some issues like crime! And I'm liberal on some other issues like prostitution! :)

Baby monkey gets his own guard dog

A Chinese zoo has given an orphan monkey its own guard dog to stop it being bullied by bigger primates.

Keepers at Jiaozuo City Zoo said the monkey was always being bullied and they had intervened to save his life several times.

"So we put a dog in the monkey cage, hoping he can protect the orphan," a zoo spokesman told the China News Network.

The zoo said the dog, Sai Hu, does his job very well.

"Whenever the baby monkey gets bullied, he dashes up and drives the others away. And the baby monkey is also very smart. Each time he smells danger he runs to jump on the dog's back and holds on tight.

"The alpha male monkey has been really unhappy since we sent in Sai Hu. He tried to organise several ambushes on the little monkey, but they all failed because of the dog," added the spokesman.

Many Asian-American voters still uncommitted

Here are some Asian-American statistics as the election is exactly 3 weeks away.

---

More than half have no party affiliation, and in this presidential election 34 percent of those who are likely to vote still haven't made up their minds.

A new study, the National Asian American Survey (www.naasurvey.com/), digs more deeply into the political life of Asian-Americans than previous polls and gives insights that could help candidates reach out to the fast-growing groups, despite some of the challenges that would involve.

Overall, the study found 41 percent of Asian Americans are likely to vote for Barack Obama, 24 percent support John McCain and 34 percent are undecided.

Vietnamese-Americans backed McCain over Obama 51 to 24 percent.

Among Japanese-Americans, 60 percent supported Obama, as did 53 percent of Asian Indian-Americans.

Chinese-Americans backed Obama 41 percent to 12 percent for McCain, but 43 percent were undecided.

Filipino, Korean and other Asian-Americans were closely divided, slightly favoring Obama, but many were undecided.

Recall bad for San Jose? - No way!

Source: San Jose Mercury News

As the city struggles with grave economic challenges, the recall will distract residents and swing the spotlight back to a conflict that many see as bizarre. Who can forget the image of the aged hunger striker on City Hall plaza last winter, risking his life for the sake of a shopping district name? For Little Saigon advocates, this was a triumph. Others felt embarrassed for him.

No! It's not bizzare. It's very important. Fighting the name change from "Saigon Business District" to "Little Saigon" may seem petty and unimportant to many people but it was very important. Saigon Business District means nothing. Once the name goes up the Communists and their millions could claim the district for themselves and the community would be fucked. The name "Little Saigon" is famously known for being the neighbourhood of South Vietnamese and therefore could never be confused for being bought by the communists.

As for Madison Nguyen, the Vietnamese people of San Jose elected her and she's ignored them. She should be supporting the community and at worst being neutral about the situtation. She of all people should know that anything anti-vietnamese community and she would be automatically be branded a communists (true or not).

But she was too naive to recognize the plight of the situation and continued to stand in the way of these protests. For this reason the people don't support her anymore. They could have waited til the next election where she would lose for sure but they are so mad that they want to recall her NOW!

Hong Kong murder-suicides on the rise

Source: Asian Pacific Post

Honour and family values isn't always a great thing. Some men feel so responsible for well-being of their family that they take full responsibility for its failure.
The extreme consequence is usually murder-suicide. The thoughts behind this selfish are : my wife cannot marry someone else... cannot have someone else take care of my kid. If I'm dying they're coming with me. It's very sad and often times it is the thought-process of the Asian man.

Saudi cleric favours one-eye veil

A Muslim cleric in Saudi Arabia has called on women to wear a full veil, or niqab, that reveals only one eye.

Sheikh Muhammad al-Habadan said showing both eyes encouraged women to use eye make-up to look seductive.

The question of how much of her face a woman should cover is a controversial topic in many Muslim societies.

The niqab is more common in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, but women in much of the Muslim Middle East wear a headscarf which covers only their hair.

Sheikh Habadan, an ultra-conservative cleric who is said to have wide influence among religious Saudis, was answering questions on the Muslim satellite channel al-Majd.

Why one eye? Might as well make it no eyes. Mascots don't need eyes!

Canadian migrants smarter than Canadian-born students

A recent study has shown that more children of immigrants in Canada have university education than non-immigrant Canadian-born children, reports the Globe and Mail.

The study, which was based on Statistics Canada 2001 census data, found that second-generation Asian-Canadian women aged 25-37 years old have over double the amount of university degrees compared with non-immigrant Canadian-born women of the same age.

The study also revealed that second-generation immigrants aged 25-37 years earned six per cent more than their non-immigrant Canadian-born counterparts, and that 44 per cent had at least 16 years of education (compared with 30 per cent of non-immigrant Canadian-born residents of the same age).

The highest number of women employed in the country came from the second-generation immigrants group aged 25-37 years, at 72 per cent, and immigrant parents with less education were more likely to have highly educated children (which was opposite to findings in non-immigrant families).

"The study offers a more precise picture of where discontent and disengagement might arise in Canadian society," said Miles Corak, a University of Ottawa professor and author of the study.

The study shows positive results for Canadian Immigration and Citizenship (CIC), which has been working hard to improve and streamline the immigration system so that more foreign workers will move to Canada.
